Institutional Development | | | | | College for Creative Studies As a part of the CCS Campus Master Plan, a 630 space parking deck was completed in 1999. The Walter B. Ford II Building, a 100,000 sq. ft. academic building that includes a 300 seat auditorium was completed in 2001. The renovation of two historic properties on Ferry were also completed in 2001. A Third property is now under renovation for additional office space. These properties provide administrative office space, freeing the Art Center Building for additional residential units for the students. Total investment: $50 million. | | | | | | The CCS Josephine Ford Sculpture Garden This Sculpture Garden is located along John R on the CCS campus and is a joint venture between the school and the Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA). It is a two acre park and displays 14 pieces of sculpture from the DIA collection. Total investment: $2 million. | | | | | | Detroit Institute of Arts The DIA has now completed an $160 million renovation. The project includes providing an appropriate conservation environment, improving visitor orientation, and increasing program and gallery space. Major features include upgrading mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems and the remediation of exterior walls. Total square footage of the expanded space is 50,000 sq. ft. Total investment: $160 million. | | | | | | Golightly Preschool A new preschool was recently opened adjacent to Golightly Elementary School. Total investment: $20 million. | | | | | | New Detroit Science Center Construction of the New Detroit Science Center’s 65,000 sq. ft. expansion was completed in July 2001. Work included upgraded accessible restrooms, a restaurant and gift store, as well as over 40,000 sq. ft. of exhibit space, a Children’s Exploration Center, Cyberspace Technology Lab, a digital dome theater and much more. Total investment: $30 million. | | | | | | University Preparatory Academy The rehabilitation of the former Cousins Clinic, located on St. Antoine at Frederick Douglass, into an elementary school is complete. The 45,000 sq. ft. building opened in September 2001 and accommodates 600 students. Total investment: $3.8 million. | | | | | | University Preparatory Academy- Math & Science As part of the Detroit Science Center expansion, this new science middle school was contructed on the exisiting parking lot of the structure and houses approx. 470 students from grades 6-8. Construction of the middle school finished in the Summer of 2009, just in time for the 2009-10 school year. The Thompson Foundation was a main supporter of the project, with investments totaling $15 million. |
Public Space Improvements
| | Hudson’s Art Park Hudson’s "Project Imagine" funded the Hudson's Art Park at Farnsworth and John R. Completed in September 2000, the park includes flowering trees, flowerbeds, seating and a commissioned sculpture for the center of the plaza. Total investment: $140,000. | | | | | | Mack and Warren Median Enhancement Program Wayne State University, Detroit Medical Center, and the University Cultural Center Association collaborated to increase the size and number of flower beds on Mack, Warren, Anthony Wayne and St. Antoine Avenues. Funded in part by the Hudson-Webber Foundation, the flowerbeds were installed in spring 2001. Total investment: $300,000. | | | | | | Peck Park The renovation of Peck Park is a collaboration between the City of Detroit, the UCCA, CCS, and the Art Center Neighborhood. Improvements to Peck Park located along Brush Street were completed during summer of 2004, and included a plaza, landscaping, lighting, and sculpture. Total investment: $650,000. | | | | | | Woodward Avenue Streetscape Enhancements This four-phased streetscape plan incorporates a number of physical improvements, including the addition of new sidewalks, safer crosswalks, flowering trees, historic style street lighting, trash receptacles, and other features. Phase 1 was completed in 2000, coming in under $1.8 million, and has had a dramatic impact by helping to produce a more desirable and safe walking environment. Phases 2 and 3 were recently completed at a cost of $5.2 million. All fundraising has been attained for Phase 4, and construction is projected to begin early 2008. UCCA will be responsible for all post-streetscape maintenance and beautification efforts along Woodward once the construction is completed. Total streetscape investment: $11.6 million.

 | 295 East Ferry This historic home on E. Ferry was recently renovated into 9 one-bedroom rental units. Total investment: $425,000. | | | |  | 430 East Ferry Nailah LLC has just developed a new residential building reminiscent of the architecture found in the East Ferry Historic District. The building is a dual occupancy residence on two floors. While both units share the same building, separate entrances, garages, and outdoor space are provided. Both units have a single car garage, an open full kitchen, a dining room, powder room, spacious living room and individual entry halls, among other amenities. Total investment: $400,000. | | | | | | 290 Hendrie This project consists of renovation of a three floor, 11-unit apartment building into a 5-unit condominium building. Phase I consists of 10 brownstones along Ferry at the corner of Beaubien. Phase II will consist of up to 38 more units with archways that open into the courtyards containing the carriage homes. The project is designed to give the buyer more input into the design of their home, including the floorplans, flooring, moldings, all kitchen and bathroom elements, etc. | | | | | | Charfoos & Christensen Expansion The law office of Charfoos and Christensen purchased the former Center for Humanistic Studies at 40 E. Ferry Street. The UCCA is the managing member of the Inn on Ferry Street Development Company. The project includes 220 units ranging in price from $75,000 to $300,000 and size from 450 sq. ft. to 1,660 sq. ft. A new four story parking garage was just constructed in 2006.
